The farmers of Shibchar upazila of Madaripur are expecting a bumper production of Boro during the current season due to suitable climatic conditions.
Enthusiastic farmers are passing busy days harvesting Boro paddy, which is their staple crop.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources in the upazila said this year farmers brought 2,910 hectares of land under Boro cultivation and they cultivated three varieties of Boro paddy of which- high breed on 365 hectares, high-yielding variety on 2,485 hectares and local on 60 hectares.
At present, the harvesting of paddy is underway at a slow pace as many fields are still in under-mature stage. Farmers said the harvest will start in full swing in the next week. If these natural disasters don’t occur, they are hopeful of satisfactory output.
Farmers have brought more low-lying char lands, beels and river areas under Boro rice farming this time to complete its harvest before the commencement of the rainy season.
Nuru Hawlader, 51, a farmer of Charjanajat union said the local Boro paddy needs no irrigation and fertilisers, simply it needs to move from one dry land to another wetland, adding that, it needs only labour. He said it is an extra paddy crop for the char people who generally harvest during their hard times.
Tota Miah, 45, another farmer of Charjanajat Union said “Though the local Boro paddy is considered as an extra crop but it is very much helpful for the char people as it not only gives us paddy but also it gives our cattle heads feed.
He said I had cultivated local Boro paddy on two bighas of land this year and most of them have been harvested. I got good production.”
Farmer Taher Hawlader said he has already started to harvest Boro paddy and getting excellent production. He is expecting to complete the Boro harvest in the current month.
Shibchar Upazila Agriculture Officer Rafiqul Islam said that farmers are expecting good yields of Boro paddy due to favourable weather, timely cultivation, availability of fertilizer, irrigation facility and other agricultural inputs. Boro has planted 2,910 hectares of land in the current season.
The transplanted seedlings of Boro paddy have already grown well and the paddy fields turned into greenish look, he said.
